FTDI chip adapter sleeping? and more

Just set up Xtension on a Mac Mini running 10.6 with an FTDI usb/DB-9 adapter. It appears as though the FTDI chip adapter is "falling asleep" after a few hours much like the Prolific adapter. Disconnected the cable from the CM11, unplugged the CM11 from the wall, and then reconnected everything without any change. But unplugging the USB cable from the Mini (w/o messing with the CM11 end of connections) brings it all back on line and Xtension is happy again. I assume the Powerlinc 1132 or CM15 USB interfaces eliminate the DB-9/USB obstacle...?

I have been running a Mac 6100 with an adapter cable to a CM-11 for...ever. After setting up a dedicated run to the breaker box, I had a stable system that would receive and transmit to all modules with acceptable success. I've decided to decommission it in an effort to reduce electrical burden (6100 shows ~480watts max load). The Mini seems like the perfect candidate to assume X10 duty since it is on and serves as a light duty user station.

Unfortunately the Mini must be located so that it can serve as a casual user computer also. This means no dedicate run to the breaker box and it shows. Two of the five units set up do not receive any signals from the Mini.

Will either of these two interfaces allow me to "reach" these other modules? Is there a solution to keeping the FTDI adapter awake?

I've yet to test it- but I'm considering a long cable run from the mini to the current dedicated X10 outlet, though I fear the run will be too long and will suffer signal loss. This would be far simpler than running a another electrical lead to the outlet since the space has been renovated.

tldr/ I've got two problems:
1. FTDI USB/DB9 adapter falls asleep
2. CM-11 cannot communicate with all modules in new location.

thanks, Rob
