Yes, it does work.

Ah, OK, didn't realize the crashing was by design.

OK, thanks for the suggestions... the oldest piece is a 7-year-old USB
hub that might be the problem.

I'm retiring several Macs at my parents' next week and I'll have a
spare USB-serial adapter and CM11a after that. Will try that too.
