Re: Total Loss of Control
This is why I have a redundant system.
I have a nice ASCO Redhat valve that is NC and it is on the water
line as the city water enters the house. It will turn off when there
is no one in the house. After certain sensors are silent for a few
hours it turns off the valve and there will be no water in the whole
house no matter what is on.
Then I have another ASCO valve that is also NC and will turn on water
to the sprinklers.
These valves are not cheap and run about $140 for the manual override
one and about $120 for the regular one. I use the manual override one
as the primary in case there is a power outage.
If one fails then the other will not work. I am like you in that I
don't want to come home to with a $1000 water bill. I have had them
in for about 10 years now and they are working just fine.
Of course in Chuck's situation there is no love with anything in his
system so all my backups would have failed.
The best system would be a mechanical one that would be powered by
the flowing water. As the water flowed it slowly closed a valve. Then
the valve would have to be opened manually or by a servo. Then if the
system failed it would not reset the valve and there would not be
water flowing. The worst is that plants would die.
