Aha! As we say in ham radio - QRM.
The evidence is very strong that you had something giving off a 40 KHz signal (not necessarily involving light) that was interfering with the remote signal to the TV.
The puzzle will be figuring out what that was. Most likely, it will
come back again.
Note that it _could_ be a CFL power supply, but it could also be some other switching supply for something in the area. The clue is that it (the supply) was turned off when you came back from shopping. Welcome to the world of electro-magnetic interference!
