yes I can see Murdoch makes millions and just because this kind of disasters are the “main” events they can be used as distraction tools. I don't see a counterposition here. Moreover, misinformation, infotainment, etc. are as old as newspapers. You are not discovering any continent. The media strategy of Katrina (24hours/7days) was actually introduced for the first time much earlier: during the desert storm campaign in Iraq. That was the big test, though the excuse was not a natural disaster, rather the further political one created decades before by the US in that area.
Then I also noted that you improved the trajectory of your words: dare have a position that is different from RH one day?

"Please preserve the difference between the spectacle (in any sense) and a disaster. The fact that a catastrophic event may be used to distract citizens from other main concerns or topical issues does not turn the Japan tsunami into the titanic. I expect you to carry out your activism in Japan for the humanitarian purposes you have deep rooted inside (not ironical here), instead of reverberating web links (you would have written this to me, Mme coherence)."
The spectacle of disaster as rolling news 24/7 with repetition, syndication, false reporting, hysteria, is a media phenomenon which has recently come to the fore on TV screens worldwide. The Chilean miners, the floods in Australia, Cyclones, now this Japanese disaster. Murdoch is making millions so is CNN. You can't see this FM?
As Richard states, Hurricane Katrina was a precursor to this new spectacle of suffering
that the ratings people love and the public consumes without question.
This event is not a distraction. Its the main event. Japan is the world's third largest economy. Yes capitalist is being brought down at a very fast pace indeed.
Activism in Japan??? There's no activists there. Australian experts at human recovery/firefighters and 100 troops from East Timor are already on the ground there.
Massive deployment of assistance has already occurred.
And cut the Mme crap mate. One day I'm a cowgirl now I'm some sort of Euro dollie.
As for the web links I chose the best, up to date coverage as we are in the same time zone/region as Japan.
