Turkey is much more laic than Italy...
There's no comparison. Italy is a country in the hands of Vatican, a theocratic foreign country.
Much more than US being a nation in the hands of a theocratic foreign country, that is Israel.
Turkey's constitution provides the army's intervention in case a confessional party would arise to government.
Italian "Democrazia Cristiana" has been leading national governments for over 60 years.
Turkey is welcome in the EC as a good example of laicity.
