The Situationist List
Isolate what you can contend/picture incomplete/
I am from the US and its the pits of advanced industrialized nation states. A lot of wealth desparity and personal bigotry among those who have it. Alot of starfucking for those who want it. Narcissism is and has been the only way to rebel or conform. Dualism beset by institutional instigators. and if you don't covet well [or at all] then your fucked. Nobody chooses to be born somewhere and likewise I don't think its fair to hold it against anyone given that you didn't say where you were from but did mention not having to take out loans for college but I will resist the urge to assume that you are from another advanced industrialized nation state.
I hate talking of walking contradictions and obviously you don't know me or the personal experiences that guide. I didn't relegate Chomsky's research I was simply making a general comment on the cultural shortcomings in activist circles and it seems that the most thorough contributor [Chris Gray] on this list at least partially agrees with me. I don't think the only way to criticize a man who teaches at an institution that recieves some 85% of its money from the pentagon; [I worked at the MIT alumni relations office, Lots of Halliburton, IBM, Ingersoll Rand, Boeing and Lockheed]; a man who almost exclusively criticises foriegn policy and never internal authoritarianism and attempts to pass off as punk rock 'biting the hand that feeds him' routine. But sure me saying he is curt and joyless is intermediated by a contrarily constructed set of Hollywood images that I am of course brainwashed by and delivered into.
Cant be anything else could it?
There are sitauations within raves, music festivals and large scale parties that I think Vanigem, Reich and Berkman would be proud of. Alot of the queer scene in NYC in the 70's post stonewall was very carefree until the AIDS phenocide hit. I like to look for how authoritarian tendencies manifest themselves in daily life and manuver through them. Sometimes head to head, sometimes not.
I didn't doubt Chomsky's credentials as a researcher, I sometimes vouch/sometimes detract from him. Just got done reading 'Failed States'. He does cite his sources fairly well. But when I was homeless in NYC with a full time job [and I'm a transsexual] he was probably drinking organic orange juice and eating pitas and hommus at some conference.
I am personally a party seeker and a party starter, true. But I don't see it as a downfall. I certainly don't see activism as joyless sacrifice though some people [not neccessarily anyone here] can make it as such. I love leisure and consequently hate the corporatized central planners that relegate life from a para dimensional strata to the atman coveting that all of us are forced to participate in and most of us are stupified. Years ago me and some friends of mine did manage to create a space for constructive and practical hedonism. It was to include all the elements of Social Anarchism, Proto-Libertarianism, Situ, Reich, as well as the cultural contributions of the Americans like Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey, Karouac, Hoffman, Ginsberg. First is was a party and it evolved into something short of an informal co-operative sector around the fun and leisure, we began to throw psychedelic
parties; something that became self sufficient. Just a means to get away from our obligatory physical expenditure quotient. It was organic. It was orgasmic. It was love. Deal with it.
PS the Fullbright program is a Govt sponsored program that sends American college students to foriegn countries to live with families of the latter country. And yes most of us are in debt up to our ass to finance university education [myself $121,565.06 USD balance] mislead from age 5 - 17 by public and private school to deliver us back into atomized labor that we were trying to escape.
