bill mollison, the founder of 'permaculture' (an anarchistic,
sustainable/ecological style of agriculture) has an interesting
perspective on this. while he would have nothing to do with the
grain-consuming, land-intensive, factory-style meat-for-export agriculture
currently in wide practice, he insists that the notion of 'getting off the
top of the food chain' is mistaken, and that true economy/ecology demands
that we eat at all trophic levels, wasting nothing.
whatever your opinion, i highly suggest looking him up-- *introduction
to permaculture*, the book i reviewed recently, is a condensed version of
his longer textbook, *permaculture*. both of them are beautiful, inspired
works, and his approach is apparently rapidly gaining respect worldwide.
