I must say the various replies to Harold in this thread
have reminded me of the reasons I gave up being a
vegetarian shortly after becoming an anarchist. The
core anti-human sentiments that so many of you have
expressed seems remarkably similar to the sort of
elitism that first gave rise to the phrase 'animal
rights'. This was coined by the aristorcracy
in France before the revolution as a kind of
joke at the idea of 'human rights'.
One example and the one that annoys me the most
is the constant trivalising of the Nazi holocaust
by implying it is equivalent to battery farming,
or cattle transporting. Another is the labelling
of people who choose to eat meat as inferior. Yet
another is the pseudo-science that is sometimes
used. But above all else its the constant return
to a 'better then thou' moralism that I otherwise
associate with religious bigots.
Having got all that off my chest I'd like to say
this does not apply to all the exponants of animal
rights I have come across, those that are
also involved in struggling alongside people tend
to have a view that this is a question of a personal
rather then a collectivly imposed morality and not
something to shove down others throats.
