[liste ra-l] (en) CFP: Manchester Workshops in Political Theory -- Anarchism
From: Alexandre Christoyannopoulos [a.christoyannopoulos-AT-googlemail.com]
Dear all:
We are planning to convene a workshop on anarchism for this year’s Manchester Workshops in Political theory. We will accept proposals on anything anarchist-related. So far, the following five papers have been
proposed:
Alex Prichard: ‘Proudhon: The Lost Prophet of Paris’
Joan Rapp: ‘Neo-anarchism and the state in the People’s Republic of China’
Matt Wilson: ‘Prefiguration and Anarchist Theory’
Ruth Kinna: ‘Title TBC’
Alexandre Christoyannopoulos: ‘Tolstoy’s Approach to Christianity’
The Manchester workshops are unlike most other conferences: an hour is set aside for each paper to be presented and discussed, and the workshop format ensures every paper-giver receives detailed feedback from every other paper-giver in the same workshop. Attendees have traditionally praised this format for both fostering collegiality and creating the space and time for in-depth theoretical explorations.
Further conference details can be found below. Unfortunately, the Anarchist Studies Network will not be able to offer financial support this year. If you are interested, please contact Alex Prichard at alprich-AT-gmail.com <alprich-AT-gmail.com">mailto:alprich-AT-gmail.com>.
Please feel free to circulate.
All the best,
Alex
Subject: Workshops in Political Theory - September 1-3, 2010 - Manchester Metropolitan University
Dear all,
Many thanks for agreeing to chair workshops at the forthcoming conference. As has been the case in the past, our 'Call for Papers' will soon appear in a number of venues, but can we please ask you to make your own recruiting efforts as well. Our advertisements should bring you some volunteers, but not necessarily enough for a workshop.
Please bear with me while I now run through some of the technical details. Each workshop will have between three and 12 paper-givers. The conference will be divided into four sessions, each lasting three and a half hours. In most cases, paper-givers will be asked to speak for 30 minutes, and will then field questions and comments for a further 30 minutes. Adjustments are possible, however. For example, we may find it convenient to squeeze four paper-givers into one session. Also, if a workshop has, say, five paper-givers, the second session can finish an hour early. A workshop can last for one session, or it may extend through all four sessions. On occasion we may have a 'Round table'
discussion about a particular topic. This could have up to six speakers and would normally last for only one session. It's up to workshop convenors to decide which papers will be accepted. (Jules and I don’t vet papers.) You may wish to ask potential paper-givers for an abstract, just to ensure that they are serious. This, however, is a matter for you. Similarly, we have no set policy on whether papers should be circulated to other workshop participants in advance. Again, it is up to the workshop convenors. Papers can be posted on the conference website (www.hlss.mmu.ac.uk/politicaltheory
<http://www.hlss.mmu.ac..uk/politicaltheory>), or they can be circulated via yourselves (the easier option). While it is assumed that all participants will be paper-givers, there is room for exceptions.
Workshop chairs, for example, are not obliged to deliver papers. Any participants who aren't giving papers must be attached to a particular workshop, and can take part only if the convenor agrees. We would be grateful if you could pass basic conference information to the participants in your workshop. It would be a good idea for you to save this email and forward it to them, as it will answer many of their questions. Please note that we will communicate directly with your workshop participants only if they contact us first. All further information (e.g. the conference timetable) will be sent to you, on the assumption that you will pass it on if necessary. (Most of the information they will need will also be posted on the website.) Note, too, that delegates are free to attend any workshop they like during those sessions when their own workshop is not meeting. Several convenors have already sent us brief descriptions of their workshops. These will soon be posted on the website. If you haven’t already done so, you can, if you wish, send a blurb to Jules (j.townshend-AT-mmu.ac.uk <j.townshend-AT-mmu.ac.uk">mailto:j.townshend-AT-mmu.ac.uk>), and he will arrange for it to be included on the website.
The standard conference fee is £180. This includes dinner on the evening of 1st September, lunches on arrival and on the 2nd, and one (possibly
two) wine receptions (plus plenty of coffee, tea, and biscuits). For those who require accommodation, the total fee is £240 for two nights B&B in Halls of Residence (a brief walk from the conference centre) and
£345 B&B en-suite in a near-by hotel. The conference fee for postgraduates is £130 (£190 for B&B in the Halls of Residence). The conference fee cannot be reduced for those who don’t intend to stay for the entire conference. (The conference begins on the afternoon of the 1st, and finishes at 1pm on the 3rd.) Please note that our financial resources are very limited. All participants, including workshop convenors, should get funding from their own institutions. Paper-givers on part-time academic contracts may qualify for the reduced postgraduate fee, even if they are not technically postgraduates any more. This would be decided on a case-by-case basis.

It will be possible to download registration forms from the conference website as well. The deadline for registration is 30th July 2010.
Delegates registering after this date will be subject to a £10 late registration fee. No one will be allowed to register after 13th August.
Please note that the University restaurant can accommodate no more than 160 people for the conference dinner/reception. Last year we had more than this number of delegates, and we expect more or less the same number this year. Late registrants may find that they are denied access to this enjoyable event, though if you fall into this category your conference fee will be reduced accordingly.
