Considering myself an anarchist and at the same time a non-vegetarian, I wanted
to throw my two cents in. The most compelling reasons for advocating veganism
that I have heard center around a) ethical/moral reasons and b) practical or
environmental reasons. While I personally can find no place for vegetarian
concerns in anarchist activities (possibly anarchist thought but I am wondering
what method of change or enforcement vegan-anarchists think we should use to
force the masses to a diet of greens and soy, a decidedly statist maneuver),
I wanted to throw my opinion out and see what the more seasoned defenders of
vegetarian interests have to say:
Concerning the ethical reasons, that is - that animals are able to be oppressed
and tortured (I think one person said raped? That's definitely a personal
choice I would say)..
(a) while
"survival of the fittest" might not be the best creed to follow when it
comes to organizing an economic system, it is intrinsically and
permanently the law of nature. In other words, if the wolves of the world
suddenly came up with a plan to subjugate humans and use them to feed off
of and use them so that the entire planet be populated by wolves - they
would do it in a new york minute. Why? Because they are driven by instinct
to do just that. From this perspective, we humans are just the fittest of
the bunch and therefore we can feed ourselves off the rest of the animals.
Certainly, the animals of the world understand this.
and
(b) animals lack moral reasoning. I will never understand why it is elitist
and speciesist to deny moral protection to creatures that do not have the
ability to reciprocate. Or even the potential to reciprocate.
As far as the environmental/practical reasoning, I think that most of the
arguments can be applied to consumerism/capitalism rather than just "people
eat meat." Certainly, in an anarchist society, people would probably not be
so exploitive in their pursuit of a steak.
