You could read a few articles by Douglas R. Hofstader published in the
Scientific American. In August 1982 there was an article about number games,
one of which involves being mediocre. In May 1983 he wrote an article about
co-operative games and in June 1983 another one about a luring lottery. All
these articles show concern about co-operation. You can find these articles
in sections VI and VII together with more comments in the book Metamagical
Themas by Hofstader.
