Hello,
How are we going to fight oppression and promote justice if our most
basic daily activities are not rooted in caring and concern for other
living creatures? What is more immidiate and important than the food we
put in our mouth, and the way that food came to the plate? Xtelle, there
are many books and writings that show the suffering involved in eating
meat, the destruction of rainforests to create grazing land, the
pollution of streams by cows (here in Oregon there was even a ballot
measure to prevent cows from destruying waterways, unfortunetly the
cattle industry was too powerful and the measure was defeated), the
enourmous quantities of grains involved in producing beef. DEAD MEAT by
Sue Coe is a recent book that shows, in powerful drawings and words, what
is involved. It also includes an illuminating essay by Alexander Cockburn
about the history of meat eating. NO COMPROMISE, the magazine of the
Animal Liberation Front also has much information, as well as the book
DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET, and other works by Francis More Lappe. The
organization People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) based in
Virginia, is also a good source of information.
I have not eaten meat or dairy products since the age of 14. I do not
see that decision as the one action that will transform the world, or
myself, but it is, for me, part of the kind of ethical and comassionate
practice that is important on the road towards liberation.
