People's History Bus Tour of Baltimore

Baltimore wasn't built overnight. It wasn't built by any single group of
men. Baltimore was made by working people: women and men, black and white.
There's more to the history of Baltimore than Harborplace and the Shot
Tower! Discover aspects of the social history of those who made Baltimore
by joining the People's History Bus.

Saturday, October 28, 2006
10:30am-2:30pm
(rain or shine)

The bus will leave in front of Eisenhower Library (Hopkins Homewood
Campus) at 10:30am and
return at 2:30pm.

Tickets: $10
(make checks out to "Research Associates Foundation" and mail to
Alternative Press Center 1443 Gorsuch Ave, Baltimore MD 21218 or stop by
the Alternative Press Center between 10:00am and 4:00pm Monday-Friday)

Basics of the Tour:

1) Federal Hill:
* History of economic development in Baltimore
* Aspects of Baltimore labor history: garment industry, canning industry,
the "Baltimore Soviet"
(maritime workers), Bethlehem Steel Shipyards

2) Roundhouse at the B&O Museum:
* History of B&O RR Strike of 1877
* More on history of economic development: Jones Falls river, paving it
over for highway, etc.

3) Hampden:
* History of a white working class mill town past and present

4) East Baltimore:
* Gentrification & neglected communities
* Johns Hopkins University's role in Baltimore

5) Broening Highway:
* History of autoworkers at General Motors plant, loss of Baltimore
manufacturing industry base
* O'Donnell Heights as working-class neighborhood

* Bill Harvey (Local labor historian)
* Neil Hertz (Humanities Center, Johns Hopkins University)
* Betty Robinson (Local activist & organizing educator)
