Michael,

You'll probably find that the answers to your question will vary widely
from one cartoonist to another. I'd suggest going direct to the source:
dailycartoonist.com is a news source for cartoonists, where you may also
leave comments or ask questions for the group. I'd also suggest going to
the editorialcartoonists.com site, where editorial cartoonists share a lot
of information back and forth.
