Curious pagination

I was at a B&N bookstore the other day, thumbing through a book about trivial information. It was paginated:

Yep. It went from Title page, © page, WHAM, page 1, no TOC, nothing. The text ended on a recto, so they put about the author on the
remaining verso. Page 1 began with the Ch. no, a blank line, then the first line of text. Talk about no foreplay! It was really weird to go from the nitty-gritty of the © page to a plain page of text.
