You're right, but they couldn't really do much else - the newspaper mast-head is so distinctive and so much a part of the newspaper brand identity that unless they went the way of, say The Independent or The Guardian newspapers and gone for a wholesale design change, they had to retain something from the current masthead to preserve continuity.

I think they did a really good job of "modernizing" a blackletter face and of combining it with a graceful sans serif.
