The best that I can offer at the moment is that it
originally referred to sheets that had been printed
on, ergo "signed". I'll try to finmd out more - the
Oxford English dictionary has a service that might
answer the question but you can't send it to them by
email.
PS Thanks for the reply about hyphenation in InDesign.
PPS What was all the French about the sodomisation of
Palestinian Muslims being something of a Zionist
specialty - I deleted it because I suspected it wasn't
bona-fide
