new Internet Service Provider for Charles Village
Paul Moscatt of the Little Shop of Hardware is preparing
to offer internet service to residents of Hampden
and Charles Village. Paul lives at the corner of 32nd
and Barclay and is testing the service himself before
taking customers. He will provide equipment and installation
at no charge and is asking $40/month for 768 Kbps symmetric,
that is, both uplink and downlink speed. This is better
than Verizon's DSL which offers 768 down but only 128 up.
(The uplink speed isn't critical if you're just using it
to send email, but it's important if you want to use a
webcam, do a videoconference, or do file-sharing like
Morpheus or Kazaa.) Verizon is charging $50/month for its
service to new customers. (Note: a current generation
modem runs at 56 Kbps, although you may get only about
40 Kbps on a typical phone line around here.)
The service is wireless (802.11 like Apple Airport) but with
antennas to boost the range. He'll be sharing out a T1
line from the Little Shop of Hardware and assigning IP
addresses dynamically.
This will be a cost-effective service if he can pull it off,
and I expect Paul would do a good job on the technical support.
Plus it rates extremely high on the "cool tech" scale.

P.S. I found out Paul will sell you CAT-5e ethernet cable at
bulk rate. Kathleen and I got a ReplayTV for Christmas, and
I connected it to our LAN. Paul sold me like 25 feet of
cable for $5 ! Try to get that price from CompUSA! (it's
raw cable so you have to clamp plugs yourself.)
